What Hugh Knew is a feature-length documentary about the universal power of love and authentic human connection in an age of digital distraction. The film tells the story of Hugh Shaw, a Flagler College senior whose unexpected death in 1983 inspired friends and family to create the Annual Hugh Shaw Memorial Longboard Classic -- a surf gathering that continues more than four decades later. What began as an act of remembrance became a living tradition of friendship, celebration, and presence -- preserving something increasingly rare: the simple act of showing up for one another in person. Through this ritual of gathering, the film explores how friendship survives, deepens, and evolves -- and what Hugh’s legacy can teach us about authentic human connection today.
